Effects on family

Family can play an important role in improving the well-being of those who have mental health problems by providing emotional and practical support. However, it is important to remember that you are not required to solve, or fix, a loved one’s problem.

Care from family members can be helpful, but it can also cause stress. People who care for family members with mental health problems often report that their time, energy, mental and physical health and finances are affected (Pearson, 2012). Daily hardships, the difficulty of accepting the illness, concern about the person’s current and future conditions and neglecting self-care can lead to family turmoil (Radfar et al., 2014).
