5. Staying safe and managing crises

When a crisis becomes an emergency

Violence

Threats of violence should be the exception, not the norm. Many people experiencing an episode of psychosis are anxious and withdrawn. However, there may be times when a person responds to symptoms (e.g., a paranoid delusion in which they feel others are trying to harm them) aggressively, threatening to harm others or property. The priority is to protect all family members, including your relative. If it is not safe to take the person to the hospital, calling the police may be the only option.
