Supporting your relative’s recovery

Continue to do enjoyable activities together

If you and your relative like taking walks or going to cafes, continue to do these activities together, even if the time you spend together is brief. Continue to do positive, low-stress activities to help you feel connected.

In addition to encouraging your relative to take their medication as prescribed and reinforcing their strengths, you can encourage them to:

work towards returning to work or school and achieving other personal goals
    spend time with friends
    avoid alcohol and other drugs
    learn to manage their stress
    learn strategies to manage symptoms
    exercise and eat healthy foods
stay involved in a treatment program.

Resilience refers to the ability to recover from difficult life experiences or cope with challenges. You play an important role in building resilience in your relative when they experience an episode of psychosis.
