What happens if your relative stops taking medication?

Medications do not cure psychosis. They control symptoms as long as your relative continues taking the medication. If your relative stops taking the medication, the symptoms will either become worse or return. For some, the symptoms return immediately, while for others it can take days or weeks for this to occur. The key way to prevent symptoms from returning is for your relative to take medication as prescribed.
