1. Understanding psychosis

View

Who is affected?

About three out of every 100 people will experience an episode of psychosis in their lifetimes. Psychosis can happen to anyone. Psychosis affects men and women equally and occurs across all backgrounds, cultures and socioeconomic groups. Most people first experience psychosis as teenagers or young adults. However, it can occur in later adulthood, and a later onset of psychosis affects women more than men (Seeman, 2010). For some people, psychosis can be episodic, with symptoms coming and going at varying levels of intensity after the first episode. Many people can, and do, recover from psychosis.
