Acceptance

Acceptance

Acceptance is a process that occurs as you gradually become aware that your family member has a substance use problem. You begin to realize you can contribute to your relative’s recovery.

You may say:

“I recognize that my child has a substance use problem and feel very sad about it. I need to take care of myself and figure out the best way to support her.”

“This isn’t how I would have chosen for things to be, but I will work to make sense out of this and cope, so that I can make life work for my relative and me.”

“This is not what I had hoped for in a partnership. I will try to figure out how I will cope and continue with my life.”
