6. Empowering Yourself through Support and Self-Care
Overview
W
hen you focus only on your relative’s substance use problems and neglect your own needs, your life can get out of balance. Having a relative with a substance use problem can take a toll and negatively affect your emotional and physical well-being. You may experience stress, poor sleep, weight loss or gain, depression and anxiety (Jones, 2009).
When you address your own needs, you are healthier and are better able to support your relative. In this module, we will review the impact of stress on family members and the sources of stress. We also look at stress assessment tools, strategies to manage stress, how to find support, and the importance and benefits of prioritizing your own self-care.
