1. Understanding psychosis

View

What causes psychosis?

It is not known what exactly causes mental health problems. However, a combination of biological, psychological and social factors can influence their development, including:

    genes
the way a person’s brain works
    difficulties during childhood
    life events
    stress
    environment.

Symptoms can emerge in response to stress, substance use or social changes. The combination of biological vulnerability and stress, which can lead to psychosis, is called the stress–vulnerability model.
