Depression 101

Access to care

Several types of barriers can make it difficult to access services:

Cost, language, distance, lack of transportation, waiting lists and limited availability of services are practical barriers to treatment.
Economic and financial pressures can make it hard to access the housing, employment and educational opportunities that would improve a person’s mental health.
Fear of prejudice can stop a person or family from seeking help.
When family doctors refuse to accept clients who have mental health or substance use histories, it is discrimination.
